I have to admit I'm ashamed of myself lately. I'm proud to be that loud mouth that always tells you what she thinks, even if you don't want to hear it. But lately I've been keeping my mouth shut on something that's too important to remain silent on any longer.
We all have opinions, on everything from the election to the number of kids Brangelina have. And we are all entitled to those opinions. However, it is not ok, under the guise of expressing your political opinion, to engender hate or intolerance, of any kind. I've gotten too many forwarded emails from friends and family this election season that prey on people's fears about certain ethnic and religious groups. This kind of behavior isn’t ok. Ever.
I think about the kind of world I want Jackson, and his yet-to-be born cousins, to grow up in and this crap has no place in it. My kids will describe my friend “J” as the one that fixes the computer, “A” as the really tall one, and “L” as the one whose kids don’t eat cheese. They will not see the color of their skin, or who they sleep with or pray to, because I will not point it out to them. Words like Arab, gay, black, Jew have no place in my home. And they have no place in my email box.
I’m sorry that I haven’t spoken out about this sooner. I know that speaking up is the only way to ensure the world I want for them exists. So please do not forward these emails to me. Do yourself the favor of thinking carefully before you hit forward. Does the Bible really say that? (Not any Bible I can find) Is whatever claim this email makes actually true? (Probably not) If you’re not sure, check. I’m posting direct links to the Snopes.com pages for all of the John McCain and Barack Obama emails and rumors that are circulating. Check them out. Or just think, “Is it possible that someone will think I’m a racist/idiot/jerk if I send this?” If it’s possible the answer is yes, do us all a favor and hit delete. But if you feel it absolutely necessary to send it, please don’t send it to me.
