Paper or Plastic?
Or stainless steel? I love my Nalgene water bottles. I've had them for years and they've survived all sorts of falls and spills. But they might cause cancer, so it's time for them to be replaced.
Certain plastics, found in everything from baby bottles to CDs, contain the chemical bisphenol A, or BPA. Numerous studies and reports have linked BPA to breast and prostate cancer in laboratory mice and early puberty in females. While the tobacco-lung cancer link doesn't quite exist yet in this case, I'm becoming convinced that there is something to it.
In the year since I was diagnosed, I've noticed news coverage of this link increase from the occasional mention in some smaller media outlets to numerous stories in major media outlets. I've tried to be rational about the decisions I make and not discard every rumored cause of cancer from my life. That's why I've hung on to my water bottles for so long. But like the connection between alcohol and breast cancer or soy and breast cancer, I've decided it's better safe than sorry on this one.
