Goodbye, Merle

There has never been any doubt in our minds that Melissa is a survivor, so it should not be a surprise that she came through today's surgery beautifully.

After a lot of waiting around this morning, the nurses called Melissa back around 11:30. While her smile was strong and radiant, the outfit they gave her for surgery left a little to be desired...The shower cap style hat they made her wear really did nothing to showcase her curls.

Melissa was in excellent spirits and if she was nervous, she really didn't let it show; she truly just wanted to get the show on the road. Mom, Dad, Granddaddy, and I kept her entertained with our antics until around 12:30, when they wheeled her away for a good nap.

And a good nap it was. When we finally got back to see her in the recovery room around 3:30, she was pretty drowsy and a little pale, but she was sitting up and talking. She remembers moving onto the operating table, but doesn't know how she got off of it, so the medicine was pretty good. Her throat is a little sore from whatever they stuck down her throat to keep her quiet during the surgery, but that should be better in about a day. The nurses explained what aches and pains she could expect over the next couple of days, gave her a little snack of ginger ale and graham crackers to settle her empty stomach, and sent her on her way. She is in good hands with Mom and Dad for the rest of the week, and I know she appreciates all of the prayers and kind thoughts you are sending her way.

It was a long day, especially for Mel, but it was a great day to say "Goodbye, Merle!"

Incredible news! Thanks Kristen for updating us so quickly. Please tell Melissa that many people were thinking of her today at Catoctin! Our prayers, thoughts, and strength are with her.

I hope that pizza is on the menu at least one night this week. After fasting for a whole day and then only ginger ale and a graham cracker, Melissa deserves something gooy!

Tell your mom that it'll be hard, but we'll hold down the fort at school until she's back!

Lots of thoughts for all of you,
Sharon

Goodbye, Merle!!
Yes!! So glad to have that out of there.
Thank you, Kristen, for the updates.
Melissa, you (and your whole family) have been in my prayers. I can hardly wait to read your words on this experience. And your thoughts.
I hope you do not mind if I share another of my children's devotions from tonight: Judges 6,7. "The angel of the Lord said to Gideon, 'Might warrior, the Lord is with you.' But Gideo was not a brave man or a "mighty" man. Gideon was scared."...God told Gideon, "You are strong. Go. I am sending you (into battle with his enemy)...I will be with you." And Gideon went along, trying to be brave, and fighting his internal fears (despite God's assurance that He was with Gideon). Gideon finally did what God told him to do. And God helped him become a brave leader (like you) who won victory over his enemy (? Merle, the bastard?!!).
YOU are a remarkable warrior.
Wishing you a restful week with your family,
Suzan

Oh Melissa, how we admire your wit, warmth and humor, even in a time of adversity.

We are so thankful you did not go postal on the hospital staff for starving you. I tuned into WTOP regularly yesterday morning, waiting for reports of a rampage...yet none came, probably because I ate enough for both of us yesterday! Thanks, pal.

As always, you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Much love, Deb, Al, Bayla & Leslie
