'Hoos for A Cure

Those of you that know me know that I have long been a supporter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. I guess I thought I was purchasing immunity from this disease with every dollar I sent them- surely since I was so aware, this couldn't happen to me, right? It turns out I was just making an investment in my future.

Last year my family participated in the Komen Foundation's Race for the Cure in Washington, DC. We enjoyed the experience so much that we decided that day we would form our own team this year. That decision took on a new gravity on February 23 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

I have set up a team called 'Hoos for a Cure to participate in this year's National Race for the Cure on June 2 in Washington, DC. I invite everyone, even Hokies, to join this team as we run and walk to find a cure for this disease.

To join our team, or make a pledge, visit our team page. Click Join our Team or Pledge to a Participant or a Team. If you register for the race, please make sure that you join our team (HFC 'Hoos for a Cure) because you can't be added in later. Let me know if you have any questions and I hope to see you on June 2!

I just wanted to reiterate what a great event this is and encourage you all to join us. Not only is "The Race" inspiring because there are so many people (men, women, children) parading the streets of D.C. for this cause, but it is also inspiring because there are so many women there clearly in the throes of their fight against breast cancer. And yet, they walk with amazing energy, grace, and determination.

Don't let the word "race" discourage you from joining us. Melissa will be in the middle of her treatments and I will be waddling along 8 months pregnant, so clearly, speed will not be a factor for us.

Oh, and if you aren't yet convinced, they give you free Sun Chips at the finish line!
